The reshaping of the UK into a welfare state at the turn of 20th century was largely attributable to the publication of 'Rediscovery of Poverty' by Booth and Rowntree, a study on the life and poverty of workers. Since then, research has been considered important as it provides fundamental data not only for academic but also for the establishment of national policies. |
In general, national policies including social welfare policies need to flexibly respond to changes in the economic conditions of the people, their spending patterns, values, reality of poverty, etc. a cross-sectional study, however, is limited in terms of analyzing such trends. |
In recognition of this limitation, foreign countries such as the US (PSID), the UK (BHPS), Germany (GSOEP), and Canada (SLID) have come up with their own panel study, and the analysis outcome of such panel data has made a great contribution to shaping their policies. |
Korea Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS) allows long-term samples to be maintained and effective analysis to be ensured by offering the largest sampling in Korea. In addition, the subject of study was selected to enable comparison between low-income and general families, with the questionnaires of various areas relating to social welfare made available. |
